Road Traffic

Tram and right-before-left

A junction without priority signs, with a double tram track running through it. “You” drive the blue car straight on from the south. At the same time a tram, a bike, a second car (B) and a pedestrian arrive. The demo shows step by step who may go first.

Key points

1. Zebra crossing — the pedestrian wants to cross – “you” stop and let her go.
2. Tram from the right — “you” move up to the junction. The tram always has priority – “you” wait.
3. Conflict — B comes from the left and sees “you” waiting. B starts to roll but realises: first the tram, then “you” (from B’s right).
4. Bike from the right — after the tram a bike comes from the east, i.e. from your right. It turns right and has priority.
5. Order — tram → bike → you → B.

Rule of thumb

The tram always goes first, even before right-before-left. After that, right-before-left applies again, also for bikes. And pedestrians at the crossing have priority even before that.

Legal basis (as of 14 Oct 2026)

Art. 36 para. 2 SVG – at junctions the vehicle coming from the right has priority (SR 741.01, Fedlex, version of 1 July 2026).
Art. 38 para. 1 SVG – the tram must be given the track and priority (“Der Strassenbahn ist das Geleise freizugeben und der Vortritt zu lassen”).
Art. 33 para. 2 SVG and Art. 6 VRV (SR 741.11) – stop before a zebra crossing if someone wants to cross.
Art. 36 para. 3 SVG – drivers turning left give way to oncoming traffic (which is why the bike turns right here, see notes).

Notes

Signs: 3.06 “junction with right-before-left” on the north and south approaches, 4.11 “zebra crossing” on both sides of the crossing. In reality 3.06 stands further before the junction; the distance is shortened here.
The bike turns right (north). If it turned from the east to the south – i.e. left – it would have to give way to oncoming car B and the order would no longer be clear.
Controls: ⏮/⏭ jump between the five phases, ⟳ rotates the view by 90°, “Order” shows the numbers, mouse wheel zooms.
