Laser Safety: Housing and Safety Glasses

Class 3B and 4 laser radiation can permanently damage the retina in a fraction of a second, even through a reflection from shiny metal. In the correct scenario the laser only runs with the protective housing closed: the warning lamp flashes, the worker wears laser safety glasses and looks away from the process. When the door is opened, the interlock switches the laser off at once and the lamp turns green. In the wrong scenario the door is open, the worker has no glasses and leans over the bright spot until the reflected beam hits the eye. Remember: never defeat safety devices, respect the warning signs and never look into the beam or a reflection.
