Safety & Accident Prevention

Cutting Machine: Light Curtain, Not Bypass

Cutting and punching machines are among the most dangerous machines in production, because the blade moves faster than anyone can react. In the correct scenario a light curtain guards the opening in front of the cutting zone: as soon as the hand breaks it, an emergency stop is triggered, the blade halts and the stack light turns red. The machine only restarts after the hand is gone and the stop has been reset. In the wrong scenario the light curtain has been bypassed, the machine keeps cutting and the scene cuts away to a red danger warning. Safety devices must never be bypassed; before any intervention, stop the machine and lock it out against restarting.
